Aston Villa: Fans are loving Dean Smith’s brutal assessment of Jonathan Kodjia

Loads of Aston Villa fans are loving Dean Smith’s parting shot at Jonathan Kodjia following the 30-year-old’s move to Al-Gharafa.

His transfer to Qatar was completed on Monday, and Smith has since come out to launch a scathing attack on the now ex-Villa player. “He wasn’t up to the standard, in my opinion,” the English coach was quoted as saying by Birmingham Live when asked about why he let Kodjia go.

“He hadn’t got to the level of fitness that, for me, was required for the Premier League. That’s the minimum standard to play Premier League football,” Smith added. Kodjia barely featured for Villa this season and, when he did, he made little impact.

In his 112 minutes of Premier League football, the Ivory Coast international failed to score a single goal and had a disappointing pass success rate of 55.6% — significantly lower than what Keinan Davis (85.7%) and Wesley (71.8%) have averaged (via WhoScored). That wastefulness in possession surely did him no favours when it came to trying to convince Smith of his quality.

And it seems fans are on the same wavelength as their manager as they took to Twitter to applaud the former Brentford boss’ stance, with one supporter quick to describe Kodjia as “lazy” and “stroppy”.

Take a look at what they had to say below…
