Aston Villa supporters have been reasonably quiet throughout the international break after seeing their side suffer a third Championship defeat of the season just prior to the fortnight interruption.
The Villans went into their encounter with Millwall on October 6 without a manager following the sacking of Steve Bruce at the start of the month, with Kevin MacDonald tasked with the job of leading the side at the Den. And while they took the lead through Tammy Abraham, goals from Shane Ferguson and Tom Elliott sealed a 2-1 win for Neil Harris’ Millwall, thus leaving Villa in 15th place in the Championship table at the season’s second break for internationals.
Thus, there have been many disappointed Villans supporters up and down the country in recent times, although the appointment of new manager Dean Smith has gone some way to lifting their spirits, what with the former Brentford boss extremely highly-rated and the man they hope can lead the club back to the Premier League.
Yet some Villa fans have taken to Twitter in recent times to react to comments made by the new boss regarding Micah Richards, with the manager admitting that he is still some way away from competitive action – unsurprisingly, these are comments which have not gone down at all well with many Villans supporters.
And those fans are absolutely right to be angry and frustrated with the £900,000-rated man (as per Transfermarkt), with serious questions needing to be asked as to why the defender is not back to full fitness after so long out of the team.
Ultimately, the 30-year-old made the move to Villa Park back in 2015 after a long association with Premier League outfit Manchester City, with whom he won the league title back in 2012, and indeed the FA Cup 12 months earlier.
But things simply haven’t worked out for the former England international since his move to the Midlands heavyweights, mustering a mere 31 senior appearances for the club in the last three years, the latest of which coming against Wolves back in October 2016.
Thus, with it now over two years since Richards last appeared for the Villans, the club’s supporters must be wondering how he can still be some way away from returning to competitive action – two years seems like ample time to get back up to speed.
And with the club having been paying his wages for the last two years and to have not got a single appearance out of him, and not likely to get one from him anytime soon, serious questions have got to be asked of the 30-year-old as to how he can remain off the pace after two years out of the side.
Ultimately, Richards has hardly endeared himself to Villa fans as it is during his time at the Midlands club, and these recent revelations from manager Smith regarding his physical condition aren’t going to help his cause, hence the backlash from fans on Twitter.
And those fans furious with the Englishman are absolutely right to be so, with serious questions needed to be asked of the ex-City star.
