Several Aston Villa fans agree with Tony Cascarino’s assessment of the side’s defence, which comes after the recent 2-1 defeat to strugglers Bournemouth.
Speaking to talkSPORT (via Birmingham Live), the former Villa striker expressed that it was too easy to score against Dean Smith’s men, suggesting that teams do not even need to string a brilliant bit of play together in order to find the back of the net.
“It’s easy to score against Villa,” he said. “Teams don’t have to do incredible play to score goals against Villa. That in itself tells you where Dean Smith’s problems are,” Cascarino later added. Indeed, defence has been a problem for the Villans this season, as stats suggest.
In 25 Premier League games, they have conceded 47 goals — no team in the division has let in more (via WhoScored). With 26 goals conceded, they also have the worst defensive record away from home, epitomising Villa’s struggles at the back.
Such form has not gone under the radar, with plenty of Villa supporters taking to Twitter to share their discontent. Some simply agreed with Cascarino, while others were quick to blame assistant manager John Terry.

Kinda makes you wonder why we pay John Terry a wage.

Cascarino is right. Have to defend better.

He’s not wrong! The defending has been league one at times.

He’s not wrong you would think with Terry and Dean smith both being former centre backs they could organise us 2 defend properly

Just makes it believable that terry lost a champions league for Chelsea

Cas is spot on. We have Terry as defence coach? We’ve shipped 47 goals. Wake up smith smell the coffee. Chester out on loan who was a rock in defence before injury. My land played a stormer Tuesday and gets dropped.

Will Aston Villa's defence cost them their Premier League status?
