Aston Villa: Fans debate local paper’s ‘team of the decade’

Local newspaper the Birmingham Mail has revealed its Aston Villa ‘team of the decade’ this week.

The team was put together by journalist Mat Kendrick, with the help of supporters who had given their opinions on who should be included on Twitter.

It has actually not been the best period for Aston Villa, who in the last 10 years suffered relegation to the Championship and played in the second tier for three seasons (Transfermarkt).

Therefore picking players deemed to have been the ‘best’ of the decade would have been no easy task, however they have managed to put one together.

Brad Friedel was selected as the goalkeeper, with James Chester, John Terry and Tyrone Mings all in there as centre-backs.

They then picked a midfield five which featured two current players in Jack Grealish and John McGinn, whilst former favourites Ashley Young, James Milner and Stiliyan Petrov also made the cut.

Two strikers were selected, Christian Benteke was one of those after excelling at Villa Park before leaving to join Liverpool, whilst Tammy Abraham who spent one season on loan with the club was also included.

Fans have been having their say on the team after it was posted on Twitter recently. Several have suggested other players who they feel have been harshly left out, here is who they believe should have been in…

Aston Villa fans, who do you think should have been included in this Team of the Decade? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
