Aston Villa: Fans drool over footage of Alan Wright’s iconic goal - Aston Villa

Lots of Aston Villa fans have been reminiscing over an iconic goal from club legend Alan Wright, after the club’s official Twitter account shared footage of his incredible ‘stunner‘ at White Hart Lane in 2000.

The Englishman developed quite a penchant for scoring long-range efforts throughout his career, and his thundering screamer against Tottenham Hotspur is certainly no exception to the rule.

The club were formed as Aston Villa Football Club in Handsworth, Birmingham - what year were they founded?

After Dion Dublin beat Spurs defender Sol Campbell in an aerial duel, Wright thumped in the fourth goal from a loose ball, putting the game beyond the London club (BBC).

The left-back spent eight years in total with the West Midlands outfit, having moved to Villa Park from Blackburn Rovers all the way back in March 1995 for a reported fee worth £1.35m. Wright went on to play for several clubs, including the likes of Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Cardiff City, and Nottingham Forest, before finally hanging up his boots at Fleetwood Town in 2011.

It is unlikely fans will ever forget his eye-catching contribution in the famous 4-2 victory.

As expected, many supporters drooled over the video clip online, with one claiming Wright was “excellent”, and another suggesting he was “underrated.”
