Aston Villa: Fans look back on that controversial Leeds United tie - Aston Villa

Many Aston Villa fans have looked back on the controversial tie with Leeds United which caused quite a scene involving Marcelo Bielsa.

With the Championship promotion race hotting up, both Leeds and Villa met in a mouth watering clash exactly one year ago today.

The fixture played at the home of Leeds, Elland Road, confirmed automatic promotion for Sheffield United due to the draw between both sides, but despite the entertaining clash, the game will be remembered for an incident involving Mateusz Klich.

Bielsa’s side opted to play on following a challenge by defender Liam Cooper on Jonathan Kodjia, who stayed on the floor injured.

Tyler Roberts looked as though he was going to kick the ball out, but then opted to pass the ball to Klich instead who would take on the Villa defence and find the back of the net to open the scoring.

The incident caused a mass-brawl which saw Ahmed El Ghazi sent off for Villa for an alleged elbow on Leeds striker Patrick Bamford, whilst Conor Hourihane also came to blows with numerous Leeds players.

Astonishing scenes followed with Bielsa ordering his players to allow Villa to run the ball into an empty net from the restart, something Albert Adomah did.

The incident will forever live on as one of the most controversial in the Championship, seeing Bielsa gain huge plaudits for his actions.

A video of the event was posted by Villa fan @villaontour_, allowing supporters to remember the incident, commenting mainly on Hourihane’s role in it. One even described the whole thing as “bonkers”:
