Aston Villa fans on Twitter thank Dr Tony Xia for his contributions

The history books will remember Dr Tony Xia for the way his time at Aston Villa has come to an end. However, as, according to Companies House, the Chinese billionaire is no longer ‘a person of significant control’ at the club, the fans have been remembering him for the impact he had at the start of Villa days and thanking him for gambling on them.

Xia still has a chunk of Aston Villa, but in truth, he’s taken a back seat since the summer when Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens came into the club to help them with their massive debts. The Villains were on the brink of going bust before Sawiris and Edens intervened, and whilst that was down to Xia, he had to gamble on the club for them to get back to the Premier League, and he only fell 90 minutes short.
Had Steve Bruce’s side been able to get past Fulham in last season’s playoff final then he could well still be the main man upstairs at Villa Park. As things have gone, though, it just hasn’t been the case and the Chinese businessman has suffered a messy end to his days at the club. However, that hasn’t stopped the fans from thanking him for the way he took them from the relegation zone in the Championship to the playoff final, and they’ll be wishing him well for the future.
You can read the Villains’ departing messages for Xia here:
He was 1 game away from taking us into the premier league, I personally thank him for his efforts, thank him for finding suitable buyers and wish him well. UTV @Dr_TonyXia

He gambled & almost went bankrupt… He gets credit for helping us when he first arrived, but he gets hammered for the way he ran the club almost into the ground.. #AVFC

I think he was a genuine man with Villa at his heart, one game would have changed everything.
