Aston Villa were unable to avoid defeat against Manchester City on Saturday, going down 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium (via BBC Sport).
Dean Smith’s side had managed to hold the champions at bay until half-time, going into the break at 0-0. However, Raheem Sterling scored just one minute into the second period before goals from David Silva and Ilkay Gundogan sealed three points.
Despite the defeat, there were some positives for Villa and one of those was the performance of Douglas Luiz.
The Brazilian hadn’t started any of the Villans previous five Premier League matches (Transfermarkt), but was selected by Smith who was perhaps looking to add a little more defensive stability to the midfield.
He used the opportunity to put in a decent performance, and he completed four successful dribbles, won one aerial duel, made one successful tackle and finished the game with a passing accuracy of 81.6% (via WhoScored).
Luiz only joined the West Midlands club in the summer, arriving from Manchester City for £15 million (via BBC Sport).
His early performances have been good though, indeed he already has two goals in eight league appearances for the club (Transfermarkt).
Fans seemed to be impressed with how he played at the Etihad despite the team losing the game. Several supporters have been offering their praise to Luiz on Twitter, here is what some had to say…
