Loads of Aston Villa fans have been slamming the links to AS Monaco striker Islam Slimani as Dean Smith’s search for a new No.9 goes on.
According to L’Equipe (via Get French Football News), the Midlands club have made an approach for the Algerian, who is currently on loan from Leicester City. He is said to be questioning his future at the Stade Louis II after losing his place in the team, though he was able to score last night in Monaco’s 3-3 draw with Paris Saint-Germain.
Smith is, of course, on the lookout for a new striker this month following the knee injury Wesley picked up. Even so, plenty of Villa fans have made it clear that they do not want Slimani, which is understandable given his previous struggles in the Premier League.
The 31-year-old really found life at parent club Leicester difficult, finding the back of the net on just eight occasions in the league. He also failed to register at all during a short loan spell with Newcastle United. In fact, the Algeria international does not even have an average for shots per game for that period (via WhoScored).
His numbers at Monaco look much healthier (seven goals in 13 Ligue 1 appearances), but that does not seem to have convinced these Villa supporters, with one fan describing the rumour as “horrible”:
It’s real worry some of the strikers we are linked with
