Aston Villa: Fans suggest Christian Benteke as club’s best striker of the decade

Several Aston Villa fans have suggested on social media that Christian Benteke has been their best striker since 2010.

Birmingham Mail editor Mat Kendrick is asking fans on Twitter to help him put together a Villa best-XI since the year 2010, and when it came to picking a striker, the vast majority selected the Belgian international.

Whilst he may be struggling for goals in the colours of Crystal Palace these days – he has no goals in ten league appearances this campaign and managed just one last season (Transfermarkt) – Benteke was much more prolific during his time at Villa Park.

Indeed, he scored a total of 49 goals in 101 appearances for the West Midlands club, whilst also providing 12 assists (Transfermarkt).

He was also in the starting line-up for Villa’s 2015 FA Cup final appearance against Arsenal (BBC Sport), and so good were his performances at the club, it ultimately led to Liverpool paying £32.5m for his services (Sky Sports).

There were honourable mentions for the likes of John Carew, Tammy Abraham and Darren Bent from fans who got involved, but there was no doubt that Benteke was the most popular choice.

Here is what some supporters said about the former Genk man when nominating him to be included in Kendrick’s best 11 of the decade…
