Aston Villa: Fernando Llorente could be ‘perfect’ for Villa, says Darren Bent

Aston Villa: Fernando Llorente could be ‘perfect’ for Villa, says Darren Bent - Aston Villa

Former Aston Villa striker Darren Bent thinks Fernando Llorente could be the perfect attacking addition for the Premier League strugglers this winter, following reports in Italy suggesting the Napoli forward is being looked at by the Villans.

According to, Villa are thought to be interested in Napoli duo Llorente and Jose Callejon. Speaking to Football Insider, Bent suggested that Llorente fits the type of profile they should be looking for in a striker, as Villa aim to stave off the threat of relegation.

He said: “If you’re Villa, you’re trying to get in anyone you can to try and score some goals for you, ‘cause you’re in dire straits.

“I think the way Villa play, you need a big, powerful presence up front to hold the ball up, someone like a [Olivier] Giroud, someone like a Llorente or [Christian] Benteke.

“Someone who can hold the ball up and then their teammates can get crosses in – they need someone they can work off. Jack Grealish could bounce the ball off him. So Llorente may work out to be perfect, but either way they need to get someone through the door.”

Would you take Benteke back at Aston Villa?

Bent sounds as if he is desperate to see Villa reinforce their attacking ranks, which is understandable given the lack of options up top – especially since Wesley has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

In Llorente, Villa would be buying a player with Premier League experience, while WhoScored notes the Spaniard’s tendency to lay the ball off – which could suggest he would be keen to get the likes of Jack Grealish involved in the play.

However, with his current side in the knockout rounds of the Champions League, it may be difficult to envisage the ex-Tottenham man being up for a relegation battle, though with a poor scoring record at Napoli this season (with just four goals to his name), perhaps he would benefit from a change of scenery.

Either way, Bent seems perfectly reasoned in laying out the positives that Llorente could bring to a Villa side low on attacking firepower – so it’s up to Dean Smith to make the right call for his side as the window enters its final fortnight.
