Former Real Madrid ace and Brazil international Roberto Carlos has revealed that he came close to joining English side Aston Villa during his playing career.
Back in 1995, Carlos was impressing in his native country and gaining interest from a number of European clubs, seeing him eventually complete a move to Italian giants Inter Milan.
The speedy defender would impress on Italian soil before moving on to join Madrid and be a massive part of the La Liga club’s Galactico era, playing alongside the likes of Raul Gonzalez, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, David Beckham and Ronaldo.
However, it all could have been different for the Brazilian, who has now revealed in a recent interview with Goal that he came close to completing a move to the Premier League with Villa in 1995.
“I was still playing in Brazil with Palmeiras when Villa came in for me in 1995, but they couldn’t afford the deal. After that, I went to Inter.”
Aside from his success with Los Blancos, Carlos would also represent his county and have unprecedented success at international level, helping Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002.
What could have been! Aston Villa would have been delighted to have had Carlos as part of the 1995/1996 squad, but it simply was not to be and the defender probably made the right move in joining Inter.
Would his career have been different? Potentially yes, but that is one of those things that will never be known.
Villa fans reading the comments made by the former Galactico will be thinking ‘what if’, but judging by his quality, a move to Villa Park would have just been a stop gap before joining a European giant.
Nevertheless, missing out on a player who went on to achieve so much in the game because of finances will certainly frustrate many of the Villans’ faithful.
