Aston Villa are interested in signing West Bromwich Albion winger Matt Phillips, as reported by Football Insider.
Phillips is entering the final year of his contract, as per Transfermarkt, which could tempt West Brom to sell the 28-year-old to avoid having to let him leave for free in the summer of 2020.
Villa are already working on their 11th and 12th signings of the season, in the form of Tom Heaton and Marvelous Nakamba, but that hasn’t stopped the Villans making a move for the Scotland international.
Phillips started 25 Championship games for West Brom last season, coming off the bench seven times, scoring five goals and assisting seven, as per WhoScored.
He made 1.7 key passes, 1.6 dribbles and 1.9 crosses per game throughout the campaign – he may not be able to quite replicate this in the Premier League, but the direct nature and progressiveness this shows indicates that he could get a lot of service to Wesley.
The pair would likely link up very well, with the Brazilian’s 191cm frame allowing him to get on the end of Phillips’ crosses, while his 17 goals last season, as per Transfermarkt, indicate he could make the most of the chances the 28-year-old would create through his dribbles and key passes.
Aston Villa really are making the most of their opportunity to strengthen this summer and Phillips would be another good addition.
It would be interesting to see who would get more game time of he and Jota, but Phillips has shown he can certainly be an effective player.
