Aston Villa’s promotion hopes were further increased on Tuesday when they managed to overcome Rotherham United. Just five months or so ago, the play-offs did not look within reach, which goes to show how remarkable of a job Dean Smith has managed to achieve at Villa Park.
Regardless of whether they are playing in the Premier League next season or not, Villa are going to need to make some additions to his squad and one rumoured target could be ideal for the club.
What’s the News?
According to a report by Calciomercato, Aston Villa have joined the race for Maritimo midfielder Josip Vukovic, with the media outlet claiming that he could be available for a fee between €900,000 and €1million (£775,000 to £862,000).
The Croatian has been largely impressive for the Primera Liga outfit this season and appears to have found his feet after a rather nomadic career to date.
However, the Championship side could find it difficult to land him with the likes of Rangers and SS Lazio both thought to be interested in the 26-year-old.
Aston Villa could certainly make do with another holding midfielder in the summer as their current options are edging closer to the final stages of their career.
The likes of Mile Jedinak and Glenn Whelan are entering the final few months of their current deals and it remains to be seen if the club hands them new contracts.
However, if they are in the Premier League next season, Vukovic could be the ideal man for the Villans to bring into the side.
The Croat is an excellent tackler of the ball and can break up the play, whilst also have the ability to play the ball forward and help build attacks on the break.
A figure of between £775,000 and £862,000 is well within the Villans’ transfer budget and is something that the club should not think twice about shelling out for a player of Vukovic’s talent, although whether the valuation by Calciomercato is worth going by is anybody’s guess at this moment.
He could also look to link up with Lovre Kalinic who could help him to settle in the Midlands, with the Croatia international goalkeeper having made the move to the club in January.
