Aston Villa duo Jack Grealish and Jota are both expected to be back involved with first-team training later this week, as the club prepare for a West Midlands derby against Wolves (via avfc.co.uk).
Defender Frederic Guilbert will also be assessed after picking up a knock against Liverpool.
Grealish was a notable absentee from the Villa side which was beaten 2-1 against Liverpool at the weekend, whilst he also missed their recent Carabao Cup tie against Wolves (Transfermarkt).
The Villa skipper has been struggling with a calf injury, and manager Dean Smith has confirmed that he wasn’t fit enough to feature against the Reds but should be back in training this week.
Speaking to Aston Villa’s official website, Smith said: “Jack’s calf was just not right at the weekend. Hopefully he will be training on Thursday at the latter part of the week.”
Smith also confirmed that former Birmingham City man Jota will also return to training this week (avfc.co.uk).
The Spaniard started three of Villa’s first five Premier League fixtures (Transfermarkt), but he had a hernia operation three weeks ago and will, therefore, be thoroughly assessed before a decision is made on his availability for the weekend.
Meanwhile, Smith has said that Guilbert was substituted against Liverpool due to an “unfortunate” dead leg and he will also be looked at ahead of the trip to Molineux (avfc.co.uk).
The potential return of Grealish is a huge boost for Aston Villa, not only is he their captain but he has also been hitting form of late.
Indeed he scored two goals and provided one assist in the three matches prior to his calf injury (Transfermarkt), and was key in the Villans picking up back-to-back wins against Norwich City and Brighton.
A potential injury for Guilbert could be a big setback though – he has cemented himself as a regular in their back four having started their last nine Premier League matches at right-back (Transfermarkt).
