Football pundit and former footballer Andy Gray has admitted that he would be majorly surprised if Jack Grealish is omitted from Gareth Southgate’s next England squad.
England have a friendly double-header against Italy and Denmark in late March, and Gray feels Grealish is more than deserving of his first senior international call-up following his performances for Aston Villa this year. Speaking on BeIN SPORTS as Grealish helped Villa to a vital 2-1 victory over Watford in the Premier League in midweek, Gray reiterated a desire for Grealish to get a nod for the Three Lions.
He said: “I keep telling you, I know there’s an England squad being named soon, and I’ll be amazed if Jack Grealish isn’t in it, I really will. I think he’s such a good footballer.”
Gray is by no means the first pundit to call for Grealish to receive international recognition later this season, with Jamie Redknapp and Carlton Cole among those to previously urge Southgate to reward the Villa midfielder.
Should Jack Grealish be in the England squad?
In fact, Gray has given Grealish plenty of praise in recent weeks – arguing that he could claim a place in Liverpool’s first team. Given the level of success enjoyed by the Reds this term, that would perhaps class as higher praise than recommending him for an England cap.
Either way, with the widespread acclaim of Grealish showing no signs of stopping following his latest performance in the Premier League, it may seem it is a case of when rather than if as far as his England bow is concerned.
With Grealish a regular member of the Villa side and having the honour of being the club’s captain, it seems the 24-year-old has a level of maturity and responsibility beyond his years. While calls for him to be called up to the England squad centre more upon his individual abilities, Grealish certainly seems to be a future international prospect with some bright years ahead of him – and Gray’s latest comments are yet further evidence of that.
