Aston Villa: Jack Grealish will only leave if Villa go down, says former striker Gabriel Agbonlahor

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor believes that Jack Grealish will only move on from the club if the Villans are relegated at the end of the season.

Grealish’s Villa are currently in the Premier League’s bottom three, but he has shone despite the team’s results, earning plenty of plaudits throughout the season from various football pundits who feel a bigger Premier League side could suit the Villa captain.

With Agbonlahor on punditry duty himself for Malaysian network Stadium Astro, the ex-forward suggested that while Grealish would not want to leave the club, the 24-year-old could depart Villa Park if Dean Smith’s team are unable to survive the drop.

He said (via Daily Express): “This season, they’ve got a squad together, they lost a lot of players in the summer. Stay up – that’s the only goal, then they’ll go again in the summer. I think if they go down, he leaves. If they stay up, it could be 50-50. If they go out and spend, he’s getting better players around him. I know him, he won’t want to leave. He’s the captain.”

Will Jack Grealish leave Aston Villa in 2020?

No

Unless something dramatic happens over the next few weeks, it may be months until we get an answer on Grealish’s future. However, there is plenty of common sense in Agbonlahor’s prediction. At 24, you may not blame Grealish for wanting to further his career albeit away from his boyhood club – especially with all the talk tipping him to be a success for a team at the top end of the Premier League table.

With Villa firmly in the relegation battle at present, that could imply that they are playing for so much more than their top-flight futures if Agbonlahor’s theory is correct. Grealish is clearly Premier League quality, with only 10 players currently boasting a higher average match rating this season, according to WhoScored.

Given Villa’s woes this term, Grealish may not be able to expect to make the most of his career if he remains at Villa, so it appears his future hinges on how loyal he is to the club, judging by the opinion of his former teammate.
