Aston Villa could be set for a major blow in January as star duo John McGinn and Jack Grealish are both on Manchester United’s transfer shortlist, as reported by Birmingham Mail (via ESPN).
Both have been in great form for Dean Smith’s side this season, but the West Midlands club could have to fight to retain their services.
According to the report, both McGinn and Grealish are on a list of eight players who Manchester United could look to try and sign in January.
It suggests that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have money to spend and that they are keen to add reinforcements to a squad which is a little thin in terms of numbers and quality at the moment.
Can Aston Villa keep hold of John McGinn long-term?
As well as the Villa duo, it is also thought that Red Bull Salzburg’s Erling Haaland, Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, Leicester City’s James Maddison, West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, AFC Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson and Lyon striker Moussa Dembele are targets for the Red Devils.
This isn’t the first time that McGinn has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. Indeed, there have even been reports that former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson would encourage the club to sign his compatriot (The Sun).
Losing either or both of McGinn and Grealish would certainly be a major blow for Aston Villa, as they have been their star performers so far this season.
They are the absolute heart and soul of the team. According to WhoScored, McGinn has been the best player for them this season and has an average rating of 7.48.
Grealish is the second highest rated player with 7.35 (WhoScored) and added to that the 24-year-old is also the club captain, so his leadership would be a huge loss were he to move on.
Losing them would rip the quality out of their midfield; they are the two players who have arguably adapted best to life in the Premier League. If they were to go, then it would make avoiding relegation a much tougher task for Villa.
