Aston Villa have confirmed that John McGinn has signed a new five-year contract to remain at the club.
The Scotland international impressed so much during his debut season as a Villa player that he won both the Fans’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards.
McGinn started 42 Championship games for Aston Villa last season, coming on as a substitute once, scoring seven goals and assisting nine, as per WhoScored.
The Scotsman also played in all three of Villa’s play-off matches, as per Transfermarkt, scoring the second goal in the final against Derby County – which turned out to be the winner, securing promotion to the Premier League.
He showed just how strong his all-round game is, completing 1.8 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per game, while also making 2.1 tackles, 1 interception and 0.6 clearances on average – his pass success rate of 78.9% is also pretty good considering how progressive he is in his play.
All of this highlights just how key McGinn was to Villa’s play and their promotion last season and despite all the signings that have been made by the club this summer, he can still be expected to have an integral role during the 2019/20 campaign.
Getting McGinn signed up to a five-year contract is a superb sign for Villa ahead of their first season back in the Premier League.
He was a key man for them last campaign and with the 24-year-old set to stick around, there will be confidence that he can continue to be for quite some time.
