Aston Villa could be set to make a late move for Rangers right-back James Tavernier, according to Football Insider.
This is due to Newcastle United’s interest in Ahmed Elmohamady, who Steve Bruce has already bought twice during his managerial career.
Rangers will hold out for £10m for their captain, as he is still 27-years-old and has three years remaining on his contract.
Tavernier played 57 games across all competitions for Rangers last season, scoring 17 goals and assisting 20 times throughout the campaign, as per Transfermarkt.
He was also part of a team that kept 24 clean sheets and while his defensive game has been questioned in the past, Football Scotland described it as “an area he’s worked on and is much improved compared to when he first joined the club.”
In contrast, Elmohamady played 42 games across the season, scoring twice and assisting eight goals, though many of his games were played as a right-midfielder.
When Villa were promoted to the Premier League, Stan Collymore said: “Love Elmo [Elmohamady], [Neil] Taylor but I don’t see the engine, legs or strength that modern fullbacks need now.
“All for rewarding guys for promotion and all for loyalty, but I’m more for not showing any sentiment. All progressive clubs are ruthless and we must be a progressive club.”
Villa would likely need to pay more for Tavernier than they would receive for Elmohamady due to the difference in age and the fact the latter has a Transfermarkt rating of just £2.7m, though it would seemingly be worth it.
Signing somebody from SPFL could be considered a risk, but Villa have been fearless in their strategy of signing players from lesser leagues already this summer.
In addition, Tavernier is at a peak age, has seemingly improved his defensive solidity and has been lethal at the other end of the pitch – in terms of both goals and assists.
