Aston Villa: Miss out on Villarreal winger Alfonso Pedraza

Aston Villa had been pursuing Villarreal left winger Alfonso Pedraza, but he has turned them down to join Real Betis, as reported by Estadio Deportivo, via Sport Witness.

Spanish outlet AS, via Estadio Deportivo, have reported a deal has been struck between the two La Liga clubs, while the latter’s report continues to disclose that Villa, as well as Eintracht Frankfurt, were turned down.

Pedraza scored thrice and assisted the same number of times in 22 starts and 12 substitute appearances for Villarreal last season.

In comparison, Anwar El Ghazi – who is likely to start on the left for Villa this season if things stay the same – scored six and assisted six in 28 starts and six substitute appearances.

El Ghazi executed 1.3 key passes per game last season, while Pedraza managed 0.7, with the Villa man also completing more dribbles per match than the Spaniard (as per WhoScored).

The Dutchman may have come up with these numbers in the Championship rather than the Premier League, but he does have top-flight experience from his time in Ligue 1 and the Eredivisie, so it could be good for Dean Smith to stick with him, having brought the winger back to Villa Park after he’d impressed on loan.

Aston Villa have made some very good additions this summer, with one of those being El Ghazi, who deserves the chance to start Premier League games – especially after scoring one of the goals that secured the play-off final win.

While many will have seen it as a bonus to bring in Pedraza, it doesn’t feel like too big a loss for Dean Smith, as he does have good wing options already.
