Aston Villa fans in the Tavern have seen their side hit a bump in the road ahead of their hopes of returning to the Premier League. Whether they can overcome their recent difficulties will rely on the improved performances of their players…
The Villans summer transfers have proven this season to be very successful with one of the better examples being Sam Johnstone. The goalkeeper on-loan from Manchester United has endured years of going from club to club but this year in the Championship and for Aston Villa, the 24-year-old has massively impressed.
In his 38 appearances this season, Johnstone has conceded just 37 goals which has proven to one of the best records in the league. With this impressive form though, Johnstone has been subject to interest from other teams in the top flight.
With this in mind, Aston Villa should turn their attention to Liverpool’s unwanted Danny Ward, valued at £2.25 million on Transfermarkt, if they fail to secure Sam Johnstone on a permanent deal.
Ward spent last season on-loan at Huddersfield as he helped David Wagner’s side to the Premier League due to his heroics in the play-off final. He played in 43 Championship games last season and within those games, managed 11 clean sheets. His form was thought to invite interest from around the English leagues but after nothing happened, Ward has been left in the Liverpool U23 side.
Our Villa fans around the bar are hopeful they can secure Sam Johnstone on a permanent basis but that seems to depend on whether Aston Villa can bounce straight back to the Premier League. Otherwise, Danny Ward would be an adequate replacement in our eyes.
