Former England under-21 international Noel Whelan has been extremely impressed with the recent performances of Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba.
The 25-year-old joined the Villans in the summer transfer window, arriving from Belgian outfit Club Brugge for an undisclosed fee (BBC Sport).
He has been a regular for the West Midlands outfit of late, starting their last seven Premier League fixtures (Transfermarkt). And it seems that his performances have caught the eye of Whelan, who has been waxing lyrical about the Zimbabwean.
Speaking to Football Insider about Nakamba after Villa’s fixture against Liverpool, Whelan said: “Wow, his energy and industry was something else. He’s forming a really impressive midfield partnership with John McGinn.
“Most of the new signings looked all over the place at the start of the season. Now, we can see the work Dean Smith and John Terry are doing on the training ground.
“Nakamba is one of those who is really bedding into the team. He was miles off the pace just a few weeks ago. Now, he looks a big talent in midfield.”
Whelan certainly has a point and when you look at the statistics surrounding Nakamba’s recent performances, they make for impressive reading.
In his seven Premier League appearances, the midfielder is averaging 3.7 tackles, 1.9 clearances and 1.6 interceptions per game which shows his defensive contribution to the team (via WhoScored).
With both John McGinn and Jack Grealish offering creativity and a goal threat from midfield, it is important to have a defensive player in there too in order to add balance.
Nakamba appears to be that man for Dean Smith, and everyone connected with Aston Villa will hope that his strong recent performances continue.
