Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has been impressed with the consistency of Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn this season.
Can Aston Villa keep hold of John McGinn long-term?
After seeing Scotland beat Cyprus 2-1 in Nicosia on Saturday, Robinson admitted that they are improving but insisted that McGinn’s performances have remained consistently good, even when the team weren’t playing too well as a whole.
Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson said: “They (Scotland) have had the security of the play-off place because of the Nations League win so their performances and failure to qualify from their group have been poor.
“They’ve slowly improved, but McGinn’s level of performances always stays the same.
“I think he has been very good in the Premier League, you know what you get, he’s an old-fashioned, hard-working box-to-box midfielder, he’s got a great engine on him and he doesn’t shirk his responsibilities.
“He makes his tackles and I think he has been very very good for Aston Villa and Scotland this year.”
Robinson is right in what he says; McGinn has excelled for Villa this season, and he has also been one of very few positives for Scotland.
He has already scored three goals and provided two assists in the Premier League (Transfermarkt), whilst also averaging 2.8 successful dribbles and 1.3 key passes per game. He has the highest average match rating (7.48) of any Villa player this season, too (WhoScored).
Added to that, he has also scored five goals and provided one assist for Scotland in his four starts this season (Transfermarkt), which shows that he is transferring his excellent club form to the international stage.
He has very much become a key player for both club and country and will be vital to Villa’s hopes of avoiding relegation as well as in Scotland’s upcoming play-off as they try to qualify for Euro 2020.
