Aston Villa are interested in signing Carlisle United defender Jarrad Branthwaite in the January transfer window, that is according to a report from Football Insider.
The 17-year-old’s contract at Brunton Park runs until the summer of 2021, but he could leave before then if the Premier League club come in for him.
Branthwaite has recently broken into the Carlisle United team and has started nine games in all competitions for them this season (WhoScored).
His performances have caught the eyes of many according to Football Insider, and they report that Aston Villa sent their own scouts to watch him play in the Cumbrian’s 2-1 defeat against Port Vale on Saturday.
He is an imposing figure who stands at 6’4″ tall, and it is believed that the Villans will continue to watch him as they weigh up whether or not to make a bid for him in January.
Carlisle are aware of the interest in Branthwaite and are bracing themselves for club’s trying to acquire his services when the transfer window reopens.
Branthwaite certainly looks to have significant potential, as highlighted by the fact that he is playing regular first team football at the age of just 17.
Villa do have plenty of centre-backs options already, though, including Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings and Bjorn Engels. Bearing that in mind, it is almost certain that he wouldn’t go straight into the senior squad.
However, he could well be a good investment for the future. He will only improve in the next few years and it could be financially good business to buy him now before his price goes up.
It may also be wise, if they did buy him, to allow him to remain at Carlisle on loan in order to continue his development by playing more first team football, as he probably wouldn’t get many minutes at Villa Park this term.
