Clearly, Aston Villa will need to do some serious business if Jack Grealish leaves in the summer. If they can get hold of Brentford’s Romaine Sawyers, he could help fans forget their loss.
The Daily Mail are reporting that Crystal Palace are eying up Grealish in case they lose Wilfried Zaha this transfer window, and that’d be a hard move for the Englishman to turn down if Villa don’t earn promotion. In that case, Villa should go for Sawyers, who Sky Sports have previously linked the club with.
Dean Smith managed the 27-year-old when he was at Brentford and he must have enjoyed what he saw from the attacking midfielder. He’s made seven assists in the Championship this season and was outstanding in their 2-0 win over Leeds on Easter Monday.
He began his career with West Brom and so may be partial to a move back to the Midlands. The close proximity to his first club could help him settle in and, with a familiar manager too, everything seems in place for him to shine at Villa Park.
The Villa faithful will be after a new hero if Grealish leaves, and Sawyers will feel like he’s really the main man at a big club. It’s unclear whether he’d be able to cope with the pressure, but for his £2.7m valuation on Transfermarkt, it’d be worth a shot.
He certainly knows how to create goals in the final third, and that’d get Villa Park on their feet after the potential (we know you’re not going to want to think about, but that’s football) disappointment of losing Grealish.
Dean Smith should reunite with Sawyers to keep their attack flying.
