Aston Villa are set to miss out on Brentford striker Neal Maupay, with the Frenchman set to sign for Brighton & Hove Albion, as reported by The Telegraph.
Villa had been pursuing him this summer, according to 90min, though he is now unlikely to join the 12 players who have made the move to Villa Park.
They are set to move in on Maupay’s teammate Said Benrahma though, as was mentioned in The Telegraph’s report.
Maupay made 43 Championship appearances for Brentford last season, scoring 25 goals and assisting eight times, as per WhoScored.
In contrast, Wesley played 48 games for Club Brugge last season, scoring 17 goals and assisting 10 times, as per Transfermarkt.
This highlights that Maupay was more prolific than the Brazilian last season, though some of Wesley’s games were in the Champions League.
Also, Wesley is 18cm taller than Maupay, who has aerial duels cited as a weakness on WhoScored, which highlights the Brazilian could be better than the Frenchman in the build-up, as well as being a better option to get on the end of balls into the box.
Maupay might have been a very good signing for Aston Villa, but it is uncertain whether he is actually needed at this time.
Dean Smith has already secured the signing of Wesley, with Jonathan Kodjia as a back-up option, so while it would have been good to see Maupay come in, it should not taint the club’s summer business at all that he hasn’t.
