Aston Villa fans in the Transfer Tavern are starting to dream – they’re just one win away from returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2016.
The Villains kept their nerve against Middlesbrough at Villa Park, holding out for a 0-0 draw that secured a 1-0 aggregate victory in the playoff semi-final. Their win sets up a Wembley showdown with Fulham – Premier League football is on offer for the victors. Promotion back to England’s top division would give Villa the chance to sign better players and more money to do so.
Should they gain promotion, Steve Bruce must add goals to the team if they are to survive next year. Only Albert Adomah and Conor Hourihane have managed double figures this season; a new goal scorer needs to be signed in the summer.
One option could be Feyenoord winger – Steven Berghuis. Valued at £8.1m by Transfermarkt, the Dutch winger has been in excellent form since leaving Watford in 2016 on loan before securing a permanent transfer last summer. Capable of playing on either wing, the 26-year-old has netted 23 goals and notched 17 assists in all competitions this season.
He was not given a chance to impress during his time with England, but his form in Holland shows just how good he is.
Aston Villa fans, thoughts?
