Aston Villa should land Arsenal’s £12.6m-rated defender to replace John Terry next season

The Aston Villa fans in the Transfer Tavern have been delighted with the impact of John Terry at Villa Park this season, but they are sceptical about his ability to step up to the Premier League once again should their side achieve promotion this season.

John Terry is one of the most successful and iconic centre-backs of the Premier League era, and with Aston Villa knocking on the door to clinch promotion back into the top-flight this season there’s every chance he could be playing his trade in the division where he made his name in world football once again next season. However, at 37-years-old it will be unreasonable to expect him to reach the level that is required of a top-flight centre-back on a regular basis, so he may be forced to play more of a bit-part role with the club next season if he decides to extend his contract with the Villans.

With that in mind, Villa should begin their search for a replacement for Terry next season who possesses both the youthfulness and top-flight experience to keep their defence sturdy and organised. One player who certainly matches that description is Arsenal’s Calum Chambers (valued at £12.6 million by Transfermarkt).

Chambers has plenty of experience in the top-flight with both Arsenal and Middlesborough, and at 23-years-old there is plenty of scope for him to improve. The young English centre-back has huge scope for improvement, but he may struggle for first-team opportunities with Arsenal next season if they decide to sign another defender in the summer window.

The fact that The Daily Star have reported Arsenal’s interest in Leicester City’s Harry Maguire suggests they are indeed in the market for another centre-back this summer, so Chambers should be available for a transfer to the Villans if they achieve promotion. Whether Arsenal will be willing to sell him on a permanent basis remains to be seen, but if that proves to be the case then Steve Bruce should make a bid to sign him on a temporary loan deal.

If Terry chooses to extend his contract with the club this summer he will undoubtedly have a key role to play in Villa’s survival bid following a potential promotion, but at his age he cannot be expected to perform to a high standard on a weekly basis, so Villa must do everything they can to sign Chambers in the summer to bolster their defensive options.
