Everyone loves a bargain, and Brentford found one in their signing of Romaine Sawyers’ on a free. Now, Dean Smith should look to take him to Villa Park in the summer as they chase promotion.
Villa are the in-form team over the last month or so, and they have their eyes on promotion this year, nevermind after. But regardless of whether they make the jump up through the play-offs or spend another year in the Championship, they should sign this 27-year-old.
Sky Sports claimed in December they want to sign the playmaker before the Daily Mail suggested the club could wait until the summer, and it would make sense considering they might need a replacement for John McGinn who was reported by the Daily Record last month to be attracting interest himself after impressing for the Villans this season.
Sawyers has made seven assists for Brentford this season, and for a free transfer that’s not too shabby at all. Expect his price to similarly low if he leaves with a year left on his contract in summer. The risk is minimal, but the reward could, and most probably would be, high.
Dean Smith has improved Villa dramatically and there’s now a positive feeling around the club. Adding another attacking midfielder in the summer would keep the fans excited, and while Sawyers wouldn’t be a big-money move, his football will do the talking.
His valuation now lies at £3m from £500,000 in 2016, according to Transfermarkt, and that’s testament to his improvements over the last few years.
He’s now hitting his prime and will be aiming to play for a big club like Villa and then break into the Premier League. The move would certainly excite the player and push Villa closer to promotion… if they haven’t achieved it already.
