Our Aston Villa fans here in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to a season that sees them challenge for promotion to the Premier League.
The men from Villa Park haven’t had much to shout about in recent years but now they are looking well placed to try and get themselves back into the Premier League.
For sure, they have a manager in Steve Bruce that knows exactly what he is doing whilst they also have the likes of John Terry on the pitch – a man whose ability needs no introduction.
Certainly, then, Villa fans will be confident of a strong year and one man who shares that ambition is new signing Glenn Whelan who has revealed his aims for the campaign in an interview with The Birmingham Mail.
“Hopefully we can get promoted this season, it’s why I came here. It’s one of my main aims.”
A seasoned Premier League player and Irish international, Whelan knows exactly what it takes to be at the top level and stay there after signing from Stoke this summer.
His words should come as positives to Villa fans, too, with it clearly suggesting that he wouldn’t have signed if he didn’t think the club was going to be on its way back to the top flight come next May.
Whelan could prove to be one of the shrewdest signings of the summer in the Championship thanks to his vast experience and cheap fee from Stoke.
He knows the game inside out and adds to the evident recruitment policy this summer that stated that experience was the order of the day.
If Villa get going quickly this season, they’re going to take some catching.
