Aston Villa: Steven Nzonzi would keep Villa in the Premier League, says Sam Allardyce

Aston Villa: Steven Nzonzi would keep Villa in the Premier League, says Sam Allardyce - Aston Villa

Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce believes Aston Villa’s chances of staying up this season would be greatly enhanced if French midfielder Steven Nzonzi joined the club this month.

Nzonzi is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Roma, though after being suspended by his temporary club after a training ground row in December, he could be on the move once again. Speaking on TalkSPORT, Allardyce – who managed Nzonzi at Blackburn Rovers – spoke highly of the 31-year-old and urged Villa to bring him back to the Premier League.

He said: “Get Steven Nzonzi and he will succeed. He would be massive for Aston Villa.

“It’s a no-brainer. This lad has got so much experience and so much talent. He could guide Villa out of trouble. He can bring stability to the midfield which would help the defence, he would help in the clean sheet scenario and his technical ability in providing the right sort of service from centre-midfield would be exceptional as well.

“They think [John] McGinn’s a good player – wait until you see Steven Nzonzi.”

Would you take Benteke back at Aston Villa?

Given the long-term absence of John McGinn in midfield, Nzonzi could provide Villa with a much-needed presence in the centre – especially considering he is more defensive-minded. And with a current Transfermarkt valuation of £12.15m, Villa would not exactly have to break the bank to bring him to Villa Park – if we assume he remains unwanted by Roma, who offloaded him in the summer.

That said, a goalscorer may still be high on Dean Smith’s shopping list this month given their lack of options up top following Wesley’s unfortunate injury, although they remain the second-worst defence in the Premier League.

Therefore, Smith may have to weigh up his options before making a move, though the opportunity of adding a World Cup winner to their defensive ranks may be too good to turn down.
