Tyrone Mings has discussed what was meant to be his first team debut with Ipswich Town against Aston Villa in the FA Cup in 2013, revealing that he had to inform his manager he was cup tied.
The England international started his career with non-league side Yate Town, before a spell with Chippenham Town led him to be signed by Ipswich.
Moving to the Suffolk based club after a short trial, Mings would arrive and look to make his first team debut.
The defender was selected for his new club’s FA Cup third round tie against Aston Villa by manager Mick McCarthy, but was forced to inform the former Republic of Ireland boss that he had already played in the competition with Yate Town against Winchester in the preliminary round.
Villa would go on to win 2-1 with goals from Darren Bent and Andreas Weimann sealing the Midlands club’s passage to the next round.
Mings, who now plays for Villa, sealing a £22m move from Bournemouth last summer, was forced to make his debut five months later, playing against Burnley at Turf Moor in 2013.
Reacting to Mings’ story via the defender’s official Twitter account, fans replied…
7 years today making my league debut.
Funny story, in the January we were playing @AVFCOfficial in the FA cup which was meant to be my debut. Manager put me in the line up the day before the game & I had to go and tell him I’d already played in the FA cup away at Winchester 🥴 pic.twitter.com/pqhcFQEPiR

Obviously you had ambitions Tyrone, but did you ever imagine on that day that you’d one day be worshipped by the Villa faithful yourself. Absolutely idolised in this household buddy, let me tell you. Hope you’re keeping well 🙏🏻👍🏻 #UTV #VTID 🦁

Things happen for a reason – just think if you’d have played it could’ve led you to a different path and you wouldn’t be at Villa now #AVFC

That was the match just before kick off when Fabian Delph came on the big screen to say he is staying at Aston Villa.
2 weeks later he signed for man city
