Aston Villa could be set to sign Brentford attacker Said Benrahma, according to The Express.
The report suggests that the Algerian will leave Griffin Park alongside Neal Maupay – who is set to join Brighton & Hove Albion, despite having been a target for Villa earlier in the window, as reported by Alan Nixon.
Benrahma started 29 Championship matches for Brentford last season, coming off the bench nine times, scoring 10 goals and assisting 14, as per WhoScored.
He was relentless going forward, making 2.9 shots, 2.3 key passes and 2.4 dribbles per game throughout the campaign.
The Algerian’s game time was split fairly equally between the left and right-wing, as per Transfermarkt, but with Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet already set to battle it out for the left-wing starting spot, it is likely Benrahma will compete with Jota for the spot on the right.
In contrast, Jota made 33 league starts for Birmingham City, coming on as a substitute seven times, scoring thrice and making 11 assists, as per WhoScored.
He also made 1.6 shots per game, 2.1 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game, which are all lower than Benrahma’s numbers.
Benrahma has shown in the Championship that he can be a dangerous player and with Villa’s fearlessness this summer of giving people their first Premier League chance including the likes of El Ghazi and Trezeguet, this could be a good fit.
What will be encouraging about this for Dean Smith if the deal goes through, is that he will have two quality options competing for a place on each wing, which should give him good squad depth for what is likely to be a gruelling campaign back in the Premier League.
