Aston Villa have reportedly made a loan offer for Leicester City striker Islam Slimani.
The 31-year-old is currently on loan at AS Monaco but, according to Le10Sport (via Leicestershire Live), the Villans are looking to bring him to the Midlands and have tabled an offer. Dean Smith needs some added firepower with Wesley out for the rest of the season, though it is debatable whether Slimani is the man to bring that.
In his previous stints in the Premier League, Slimani has really struggled. Back in the 2017/18 season, he scored just one goal for parent club Leicester before going out on loan to Newcastle United, where his barren spell continued. There, Slimani failed to score a single goal.
At Monaco, he has had a resurgence. In the current Ligue 1 campaign, Slimani has managed to find the back of the net on seven occasions. He has also registered seven assists to make his revival look all the more impressive.
Still, given the Algerian’s struggles in English football’s top division in the past, you cannot help but think that this could be a huge gamble on Villa’s part.
Winning 2.7 aerial duels per league game this term, which is not incredibly far off Wesley’s 3.3 (via WhoScored), it is not too hard to understand Smith’s thinking here. In Slimani, the Villa boss could be getting a very similar forward to the one he has just lost to injury — one in the target man mould.
However, with the Premier League outfit in a relegation battle and obviously needing goals to stay up, Slimani might not be the best option given his history in the division.
