Aston Villa look set to miss out on Steven Nzonzi this month, with the World Cup winner reportedly closing in on a move to Rennes.
The Midlands club were said to be interested in signing Nzonzi in the current transfer window. However, according to Footmercato (via Daily Star), the most likely destination looks to be Rennes once his loan spell with Galatasaray is terminated.
Given his profile, missing out on Nzonzi may come as a disappointment to some. After all, he is a World Cup winner with France and has a Europa League winner’s medal from his time at Sevilla.
But surely it is not the end of the world for Villa? Looking at their squad, Dean Smith is hardly lacking options in midfield. Take Marvelous Nakamba, for example, who has posted some decent numbers this season on WhoScored.
According to the website, the Zimbabwe international is averaging 2.7 tackles per Premier League game, significantly more than Nzonzi’s league average of 0.9. 0.9 also happens to be the average Douglas Luiz has recorded in the current campaign, suggesting that the Frenchman would not be an upgrade on him in that department either.
Ultimately, midfield does not look to be a huge concern for the Villans right now. They have the likes of Nakamba and Luiz, while Danny Drinkwater was also brought in earlier this month.
Rather, where they could have issues is up front with Mbwana Samatta being unproven in a top European league and Wesley out for the rest of the season.
