Aston Villa won’t accept anything less than promotion to the Premier League in the current campaign, but securing a play-off spot will be hard enough for the Villains.
Indeed, the Midlands club have certainly come on leaps and bounds under Dean Smith, but their recent result against Leeds United just goes to show that plenty of improvements are still required.
Although, it appears as if they’re eyeing a possible transfer swoop, as according to Sky Sports, Aston Villa want to sign Romaine Sawyers from Dean Smith’s former club Brentford.
Dean Smith is understood to be keen on working with the 27-year-old for a third time, having taken him to Griffin Park from Walsall in 2016.
The Villains already have the likes of Conor Hourihane and John McGinn operating in midfield areas, but Sawyers has plenty of potential and could offer a different dynamic in the final third.
Romaine Sawyers already has a number of international appearances to his name, and is slowly establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in the Championship, so the Villains should go all out to sign him.
He can offer pace, skill and an eagle eye for goal in the final third, along with the ability to provide defensive solidity and energy for the full 90 minutes.
