Aston Villa have a massive campaign on the horizon in the Championship and their fans lining the bar here in the Tavern know that the pressure is on the shoulders of Steve Bruce.
The former Birmingham City boss really must be looking to guide his team back to the Premier League at the second attempt after the side struggled so badly in their first outing in the Championship.
It was a campaign that certainly took some Villa fans by surprise and it’s a division that certainly isn’t going to get any easier anytime soon, especially with the addition of the three sides that are coming up from League One.
Despite struggling last season though, Villa would have learnt a lot from their first spell back in the second-tier for sometime and their transfer plans are set to change this summer as a result.
Earlier this summer, Villa had a £500,000 bid for experienced Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan rejected and according to the Birmingham Mail, Villa are yet to follow up after their first offer.
It’s thought that Villa need to move on some of their fringe players before they begin adding to their own ranks but a move for old-hand Whelan, who has bags of experience at this level, suggests Villa might be targeting gritter sorts of players for the upcoming campaign.
They’ve got lots of quality in their squad already but it’s common knowledge amongst the Villa fans here in the pub that some of the individuals in the ranks were far too lightweight.
But a deal for Whelan is certainly stalling so far.
