The Aston Villa fans in the Transfer Tavern are on their knees praying that their side can make it through the play-offs and reach the top flight of English football once again.
Villa only have themselves to blame after missing out on automatic promotion because of the mixture of results the Villans endured throughout the season. It really was a rollercoaster of emotions and one consistent performer, ‘keeper Sam Johnston, faces an uncertain future as he will return from his loan to Manchester United this summer.
His performances have been eye-catching and the Villans may struggle to prize him back to Villa Park without the lure of Premier League football. In that case, a perfect replacement would be the out-of-contract Tim Krul, who is currently valued at £2.2 million on Transfermarkt.
The Brighton goalkeeper has played second-string to Matt Ryan in the Seagulls net and this summer it’s unlikely that Brighton will renew his contract. Tim Krul still has a lot to offer a team and he would be a good shot-stopper in the Premier League or Championship, wherever Villa may find themselves.
Of course after this season, Villa will be hopeful of keeping Sam Johnstone but because of the potential high demand for the Englishman, it would be wise of the Villans to sound out potential replacements should it come to that. Krul has featured in 8 games for Brighton this season, keeping 2 clean sheets in those and conceding 10 goals.
Krul is just one of many Premier League stars out of contract this summer and if Aston Villa want to build up their squad quality, the Dutchman would be a smart signing.
