Aston Villa supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been using the last few days to look back at their side’s Championship season so far, and indeed look ahead to what their team could look to achieve in the final few months of the campaign.
Steve Bruce’s men made a sluggish start to the 2017/18 season and doubts were certainly raised regarding the former Hull City and Birmingham City manager’s capabilities in the role, although he has since answered those questions emphatically. And that’s because, with just nine games of the campaign remaining, the Villans are very much in promotion contention, and as such could well end their two-year wait for a return to the Premier League come May.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Villa fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their team can usurp second place Cardiff City between now and the end of the season, and thus secure an automatic return to the top-flight.
And were the Midlands giants to indeed seal promotion, reinforcements will certainly be needed in the summer, and as such Bruce must urge chairman Tony Xia to make a move for Everton youngster Ademola Lookman.
And that’s because the England Under-20 World Cup has all the qualities to go on and become a top player in the years to come, and would certainly give this Villa side another dynamic option going forward next term.
Ultimately, the 20-year-old hasn’t quite been afforded the opportunities many expected him to get when he made a fast start to life at Goodison Park, bagging within a minute of coming on for his debut in their 4-0 rout of Manchester City back in January 2017.
Yet the England youth international has since appeared just 23 times for Sam Allardyce’s side and only seven of those have come in the Premier League this season – this all despite the Toffees’ evident difficulties for goals and creativity in the final third of the pitch.
And while Lookman may have struggled for minutes this term, to the point that he joined Leipzig on loan back in January, there’s little doubting his quality in the final third of the pitch – many of our resident Everton fans were left perplexed that their team failed to use him during the first half of the season.
The 20-year-old loves to take defenders on with his pace and trickery, yet he also does his defensive duties well to suggest that he can be just as reliable in an attacking role as he is when tasked with more defensive work.
Importantly though, in an era where many wide players and wingers do not take opposing full backs on as readily, Lookman goes against the grain, and as such would be a huge asset to Bruce’s side if they made the step up to the Premier League next term – he’s the sort of player that gets fans out of their seats.
Ultimately, most sides that struggle in the top-flight are those that simply do not have enough goals in the team, or do not create enough chances – West Brom are the lowest scorers in the Premier League this term, and they are almost certainly going down.
But Lookman’s arrival would bolster Villa’s attacking ranks, and based on his few appearances at top-flight level so far, he wouldn’t look out of place lining up for the Villans in the top tier.
His Everton future appears uncertain at present, given that he didn’t earn much football under Allardyce prior to his loan spell, and as such Bruce and the Villa hierarchy must seek to exploit that by making a move for the £6.3 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) if they get promoted.
