According to The Mirror, Aston Villa are set to go up against some of their Championship rivals in a bid to sign Manchester United’s third choice goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, with our resident Villa fans here in the Transfer Tavern hoping the deal goes through.
The stopper has not seen much playing time for the Old Trafford side with first-choice David De Gea and backup Sergio Romero in his way in the United pecking order, so he may be tempted by the opportunity of more first-team football a level below.
Villa are apparently interested but look set to be joined by Nottingham Forest and Wolves in their attempts to secure a loan deal for the ‘keeper.
Johnstone has spent loan spells with the likes of Doncaster Rovers and Preston North End in recent seasons but has always returned to United with the aim of getting into their side, something he has yet to really achieve.
He also has three appearances for the England U20’s to his name.
