Aston Villa supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side get back to winning ways in the Championship courtesy of a routine 3-0 victory over relegation-threatened Reading on Tuesday night.
Steve Bruce’s men failed to win any of their three league games prior to the Royals’ visit to Villa Park on Tuesday, having lost at the hands of Queens Park Rangers and Bolton Wanderers, and only managing a 0-0 draw against struggling Hull City. Yet the Villans returned to winning ways with minimal fuss on Tuesday as goals from Birkir Bjarnason, Conor Hourihane, and Scott Hogan clinched the three points for the Midlands giants, who certainly took advantage of a red card to Reading’s Dave Edwards midway through the first half to record a 21st victory of the season.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Villa fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that Tuesday’s win can be the catalyst for a run of form which takes them back towards the Championship’s automatic promotion places.
Yet some of our resident Villans supporters are already looking towards the summer and what business their side may do if they win promotion, with several of the opinion that their club must land £3.6 million-rated Fulham right back Ryan Fredericks (as per Transfermarkt) if they return to the top-flight.
Ultimately, the 25-year-old has proven to be one of the best full backs outside of the Premier League in the last few seasons, with Fredericks laying on five assists to help Slavisa Jokanovic’s side reach the Championship play-offs last term, although they came up short against Reading in the semi-finals.
And the former England Under-19 international has taken it up another notch this time round having laid on nine assists for the Cottagers in their run to third place, with the 25-year-old possessing incredible pace to get up and down the right flank, thus fulfilling defensive duties as well as lending a hand in attack.
Alongside versatility in being able to play further up the field on the right, as well as down the left-hand-side, the Englishman would be an asset to any side in the Championship and indeed in the Premier League. And given he is out of contract in the summer, he wouldn’t cost too much either.
And if the Villans do indeed go up this term, they will surely be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements, what with the contracts of Alan Hutton, Chris Samba, and John Terry all set to expire come the end of the campaign.
And with the former often used at right back by Bruce this term, alongside Ahmed Elmohamady, the Villans could be short in the right back department come the start of the 2018/19 campaign – Fredericks arrival would bolster those ranks though.
As such, Bruce must urge chairman Dr Tony Xia to make a move for the Fulham star if Villa do indeed win promotion to the Premier League this season.
