Aston Villa have been rather disappointing in the current campaign as they continue to slip away from the promotion places.
The Villains would have had their sights set on securing promotion to the Premier League after the heartache of last season’s play-off final, but things just haven’t gone to plan. Indeed, Steve Bruce has been relieved of his duties at Villa Park after a poor start to proceedings, with the Midlands club currently sitting in fifteenth position.
Worryingly, the Englishman wasn’t able to get the best out of his players and made a number of debatable managerial decisions this season, which has cost them dearly.
With that being said, here’s a look at TWO of Bruce’s biggest blunders…
One of Steve Bruce’s biggest mistakes was his use of defensive options this season, with a leaky defence constantly being the downfall. Indeed, the Villains have the joint-second worst defensive record in the Championship having conceded 20 goals already, so it comes as no surprise that Bruce is no longer a part of the club.
The former Villa boss often opted to deploy Mile Jedinak at the heart of the defence, which proved to be a big mistake when it came down to grinding out positive results as they’ve never looked assured without John Terry.
There’s no doubt that Aston Villa have one of the strongest squads in the whole of the Championship, but Bruce just wasn’t able to get the best out of his players. Indeed, the 57-year-old made some bad decisions in the current campaign, with his team selection and tactical choices having a negative effect.
Bruce often opted to switch between two up front and one up front, which made it difficult for the players to adjust as they became unsettled. And, the choice to leave the likes of Anwar El Ghazi, Yannick Bolasie and Albert Adomah out of the side at times has been very questionable, as all three would fit into pretty much any Championship side.
