Dean Smith hints that a centre-back is a priority this January

Aston Villa will need to head into the transfer window this winter if they are to improve things on the pitch.

The Villans held aspirations of achieving promotion to the Premier League after falling at the final hurdle last season, however, things did not start well for them.

Steve Bruce was sacked and shortly replaced by Dean Smith, who has seen his new side pick up one win and two defeats in his first three games in charge.

The former Brentford manager knows that he will need to make improvements to the team and will look to the January transfer market for additions, with one position appearing to be at the forefront of his mind.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Smith could look to bring a centre-back to the team, with just James Chester and Axel Tuanzebe their recognised men.

When asked, Smith said: “It’s something we are constantly monitoring.

“At the moment we’ve got two recognised centre-backs.

“We certainly need to look to add to that area, that’s for sure.”

The Verdict:

The centre-back position should surely be a priority for Aston Villa in the January transfer window as they do not have the options available to them for the duration of the campaign, especially if disaster struck.

Chester and Tuanzebe have both looked suspect at times with their play, but having the likes of Mile Jedinak and Alan Hutton as their other options will not feel many of the Villans faithful with much confidence.

To be fair to Villa, they do have a rather attacking side that could start firing once they get used to Smith’s system, however, their defence must surely become a priority in trying to strengthen their squad.
