It is no secret that Aston Villa are currently lacking options at centre-back this season and one of the tasks Dean Smith will have is to bring one to Villa Park.
James Collins, who is currently a free agent, has been training with the club to keep up his fitness, whilst also in the hopes of potentially securing a deal with the Championship outfit.
There has not been any official offer as of yet, however, Smith has revealed that he is keen to keep an eye on the defender, who is currently sitting out with an injury.
Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, he said: “James is not fit at the moment so he’s going through his rehab to get himself fit.
“We’ll take it from there after that.
“He’ll have some rehab for seven to days then he should be ready to go and train with the first-team.
“Everybody knows our lack of centre-backs so I think it is right to keep him around us.
“It was Steve who brought him in here for the same reason.
“We’ll keep him around us and see what fitness levels he can get to.
“He’s an out-of-contract player so he’s one we can add to the squad if need be.”
Collins has been training with the Aston Villa squad for some time now, so the club must be taking a serious look at him.
The defender, who has picked up an unfortunate injury, would be an ideal option for the Villans to bolster their defence in the short-term, should he be able to prove his fitness.
With the likes of Mile Jedinak and Alan Hutton having both had to fill in when either James Chester or Axel Tuanzebe are unavailable, Collins should certainly be in the thoughts of Smith.
