Dean Smith could be close to making his first signing for Aston Villa since joining the club as their new manager.
The former Brentford boss replaced Steve Bruce following his sacking and will take charge of his first game at the weekend whey take on Swansea City.
The Villans have been poor this season and did not look like a side that will be in contention for promotion at the end of the campaign unless things change.
Their defence has been of real concern, however, it is believed Smith could be preparing to make an addition to help strengthen the area.
The 35-year-old, who is currently a free agent, has been training with the Villa Park outfit over the past week as he works his way back to full fitness from a previous hamstring injury.
Smith should definitely take a look at Collins and considered weighing up the possibility of bringing the veteran in on a short-term deal.
Aston Villa are short of options at the back, having utilised the likes of Mile Jedinak in the past as cover and only have James Chester as their recognised senior man.
Being a free agent, Collins would be able to come into the side immediately, and would not likely cost the Villans too much financially, whilst it would also give them the chance to look at some possible players to target in the transfer window when it reopens in January.
