Shane Long’s impressive form this season has him lined up on several Premiership clubs shopping lists and the latest club to have a look at him is Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United. The North East club sent scouts to watch him during the Republic of Ireland’s recent internationals.
The striker impressed in the matches against Macedonia and Uruguay last week and with Newcastle well known to be short of quality up front, reports are coming out that they are prepared to make a bid for the 24 year old. It is thought the club will make an offer of around £7.5 million to take him to St James Park in the summer.
Long has been prolific for Reading this season, scoring 21 goals in all competitions. 18 of these were scored in the Championship making him the league’s 2nd placed top goal scorer behind Watford’s Danny Graham on 23. He has helped guide the team to 7th place and should they win their game in hand, Reading would move into the Play Off positions via goal difference.

Alan Pardew has confirmed that Mike Ashley will allow him to spend all of the £35 million received from the Andy Carroll transfer, should they avoid relegation. It is no secret Pardew’s highest priority is a striker and Shane Long is one of those short listed. The Irishman would be able to at least double his wages and would be more than interested in a move, should his current employers fail to reach the Premier League this season.
However Newcastle aren’t the only club interested in the talented youngster with it being rumoured that Wolves, Stoke, Villa and Everton are weighing up a bid in the summer. Newcastle will feel they have the edge though due to the bigger transfer kitty they will have available to them.
