Aston Villa supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side’s Championship promotion hopes suffer a blow courtesy of successive defeats at the hands of Queens Park Rangers and Bolton Wanderers.
Steve Bruce’s men went into their clash with the Hoops back on March 13 having thumped league leaders Wolves 4-1 to underline their promotion credentials, only to go down 3-1 at home to Ian Holloway’s side last week to dent their top two aspirations. And things didn’t get much better at the weekend for the Villans as an Adam Le Fondre goal after just 19 minutes was enough to earn Bolton a vital 1-0 success at the Macron Stadium, a defeat which leaves Villa fourth in the Championship and now seven points off second place Cardiff City.
As such, there have been many disappointed Villans fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team will regroup over the international break ahead of the final eight matches of the campaign.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Villa supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking them with a move for West Brom’s Craig Dawson this summer.
And while the Baggies defender would be a useful addition to Bruce’s squad, the Midlands giants should forget about a move for the 27-year-old, and instead target £12.6 million-rated Arsenal star Calum Chambers (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the 23-year-old remains on the peripheries at the Emirates Stadium four years after moving to North London from Southampton, with the versatile defender having managed just 75 appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side in that time.
And with just six Premier League appearances to his name this season, it doesn’t look like he’s going to be commanding regular football at the Emirates anytime soon, to the point that he was shipped out on loan to newly-promoted Middlesbrough last term to get minutes under his belt.
Chambers made 24 league appearances for the Teessiders, and while he wasn’t able to keep them in the top-flight, the North East outfit did have one of the best defensive records in the bottom half of the Premier League, and the 23-year-old more than played his part in that to suggest that he could be ideal for Villa if they win promotion this term.
Be it at centre-back alongside John Terry or James Chester, or deputising for Alan Hutton and Ahmed Elmohamady at right back, Chambers could do a job, and even push the aforementioned quartet for a regular starting role.
Ultimately, if Villa do indeed go up this season, they will need reinforcements in many areas of the pitch over the summer, and with Chris Samba to turn 34 later this month and Micah Richards seemingly a surplus to requirements, there’s no doubt that the centre back department needs strengthening.
And with question marks over the future of Hutton, it’s plausible that Bruce’s defensive ranks will be very light heading into the new season. Yet Chambers’ addition would bolster both areas.
And with it unlikely that he’ll break into Wenger’s first team on a regular basis, the Gunners may well be interested in sanctioning the 23-year-old’s departure this summer, be it temporarily or on a permanent deal.
As such, Bruce must urge chairman Tony Xia to land the England international if Villa are promoted this season.
