Aston Villa

Forget Jedinak, Nyland will cost Smith more points this season

Aston Villa have not had the most glamorous start to their Championship season. Last season’s beaten play off finalists sacked Steve Bruce last week after he only managed one win from his nine previous league matches.

The club have also endured some positional crises, particularly at centre-back, which has seen full-back Alan Hutton deployed there at times, but more often midfielder Mile Jedinak. The 34-year-old Australian has been chastised by fans during the club’s terrible run, after struggling with the adjustment.

However, it is hard to blame a player that has been made to make such a drastic positional change. Additionally, blaming Jedinak papers over some bigger, more serious cracks at the club; one primarily being goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.

The Norwegian shot stopper joined The Villans in the summer, but has failed to win over his fans yet. Some horrendous errors have made him quite a maligned figure at the club, particularly the howler against Ipswich that cost his team a win.

Since then, he hasn’t done much to impress at Villa Park. This culminated in Bruce dropping the keeper for his final game in charge, but it proved to be vain. But ultimately, if the keeper issue is not addressed imminently, Villa’s season will not get much better.

New manager Dean Smith may be able to attract stars from his former club Brentford with him, and keeper Daniel Bentley should be at the top of his list come January. Until then, Smith has a job on his hands working out who his first choice keeper is.
