Forget Livermore: Aston Villa must target his £8.1m-rated West Brom teammate if they go up

Aston Villa supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side’s Championship promotion hopes take a huge hit courtesy of a 3-1 defeat at Norwich City on Saturday.

Steve Bruce’s men went into their clash at Carrow Road off the back of beating struggling Reading in midweek, a result which moved them to within seven points of second place Cardiff City. However, the Villans were unable to take advantage of the Bluebirds’ 1-0 loss against Wolves on Friday night as goals from Josh Murphy, Dennis Srbeny, and Harrison Reed secured a comfortable win for Daniel Farke’s side, with Jack Grealish’s second half effort all the travelling Villa fans had to cheer on a desperately disappointing day in Norfolk.

Consequently, there have been many frustrated and indeed angry Villans supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their side can get back to winning ways when they host Neil Warnock’s Cardiff on Tuesday night.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Villa fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a summer move for West Brom midfielder Jake Livermore.

And while the England international would be a useful addition to Bruce’s squad, the Villans should forget about Livermore and target a move for his £8.1 million-rated West Brom teammate Matt Phillips (as per Transfermarkt) instead if they win promotion.

Ultimately, the 27-year-old has proven to be an adept winger at Premier League level since his move to the Hawthorns back in 2016, with the Scotland international netting four goals and laying on an impressive eight assists in the Baggies’ run to a top ten finish last time round.

And while things haven’t been as good for Phillips this term in bagging just once for the managerless Midlands club, his efforts for them last season should not be forgotten, as shouldn’t the three goals and eight assists he contributed for Queens Park Rangers in the 2014/15 campaign.

Thus, it’s evident that the 27-year-old has great ability at top-flight level and as such could be an asset to Bruce’s side next season if they win promotion, especially given that it remains unclear whether they can secure a permanent deal for Robert Snodgrass.

And even if they did land the West Ham winger, it appears that more reinforcements are needed in the attacking department what with just two players, Albert Adomah and Conor Hourihane, reaching double figures in the Championship this season – Phillips would bolster those ranks.

And with West Brom almost certainly going down from the Premier League this season, given they are bottom and ten points adrift of safety, Phillips could well be on the lookout for a move, and remaining in the top-flight were Villa to go up may well interest the Scot.

And a move for Phillips should seriously interest Bruce and the Villa hierarchy, who should forget about Livermore and instead target his Baggies teammate during the close season.
